3 Ways to Get the Most From Large Format Printing

When they're handled right, that is.

Here are some tips for large format printing to keep in mind to help you create banners and get the most out of your design displays.

1. Get Your Dimensions

Large format printing comes in a lot of shapes and sizes. This means that your promotional materials are not necessarily interchangeable. It's important to keep this in mind before sending your materials to be printed as improperly formatted promotional materials can end up doing more harm than good.

To give you an example, have you ever posted graphics on social media? Have you ever tried to use the same image for Instagram, Twitter, or as a Facebook header?

Best case scenario, you end up with some of your brand messages getting accidentally cropped. At worst, your design displays could end up looking like they were left out to melt in the sun.

The materials you need to create banners can be quite a bit different than what you'd need for a flyer, for instance. 

When you're setting to send your project to a large format printer, it's important to get the dimensions of the final format. Then once you've got all your measurements, you can create separate projects for each separate medium. 

Or you can work with a graphic designer who's trained to work with large format printers.

2. Use Vectors

The main risk of improperly formatting materials for a large format printer is distortion to your graphics and text. Raw JPG images are not necessarily the best choice when it comes to creating large format printing.

If it's possible, you should prioritize using vector images. Vector images are created to be used in a variety of different situations and formats. They're intended to be altered, so they can be enlarged to whatever dimensions you need without a loss in quality.

Vector images tend to come in EPS, AI, or SVG format. If you only have your images in JPG format it's sometimes possible to use a JPG to SVG converter, depending on the image you're working with.

If it's at all possible, you should strive to work with EPS images. EPS files can be reproduced at virtually any size without sacrificing quality. If you're creating original promotional materials and have a choice, save your promotional materials in EPS format for the highest possible quality.

3. Choose Legible Fonts

When you're creating promotional materials, it's tempting to get as fancy as possible especially if you're using graphic design software with all the bells and whistles. We understand the temptation but when it comes to brand design, usually less is more.

We understand, elaborate Gothic and graffiti scripts look cool. Hand-drawn or cursive scripts can bring some much-needed cuteness to your promotional materials. 

For the most part, we advise against picking elaborate scripts that can be difficult to read. This is especially true due to the decline in reading cursive in the 21st Century.

If you do opt to use some sort of decorative font, we recommend you restrict it to branding elements like your logo. Then choose a more legible font for delivering the most important brand message like Helvetica.

When it comes to choosing fonts, everybody's tastes are different. There are no hard and fast rules as to what makes the "right font." One general rule of thumb is that serifs can make fonts harder to read.

Streamline, more modern fonts will generally make your signage and banners easier to read and understand. Look at some examples of famous graphic design like the Paris Metro for some examples to model your promotional materials after.
